Common Outdoor Injuries During Summer
Summer is the perfect time to enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, biking, swimming, sports, and family gatherings. While spending time outside is great for your health, it also comes with a higher risk of injuries. Knowing how to recognize and treat common summer injuries can help prevent complications and get you back to enjoying the season.
At Expedite Urgent Care, we provide fast, walk-in treatment for many non-life-threatening injuries so you can get the care you need without a long emergency room wait.
1. Sprains and Strains
Whether you’re hiking a local trail, playing pickleball, or chasing kids around the park, sprains and strains are among the most common summer injuries.
A sprain occurs when ligaments are stretched or torn, while a strain affects muscles or tendons. Symptoms often include pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty moving the affected area.
Minor injuries may improve with rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE). However, medical evaluation is recommended if you experience severe swelling, significant pain, inability to bear weight, or limited movement.
2. Cuts and Scrapes
Outdoor activities often involve sharp rocks, branches, playground equipment, or sports equipment that can lead to cuts and abrasions.
Although many minor cuts can be cleaned and bandaged at home, deeper wounds may require stitches to promote proper healing and reduce the risk of infection. It is generally recommended that lacerations be evaluated within several hours of the injury for the best chance of successful closure.
Seek medical attention if:
- The bleeding won’t stop.
- The cut is deep or gaping.
- Dirt or debris cannot be removed.
- Signs of infection develop, such as redness, warmth, swelling, or pus.
3. Fractures
Falls from bicycles, skateboards, scooters, or playground equipment can result in broken bones.
Common signs include:
- Severe pain
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Visible deformity
- Difficulty using the injured limb
Prompt evaluation is important. An urgent care provider can assess the injury, provide stabilization, and determine whether additional imaging or specialty care is needed.
4. Heat-Related Injuries
High summer temperatures increase the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially during prolonged outdoor activities.
Heat exhaustion symptoms may include:
- Heavy sweating
- Dizziness
- Weakness
- Nausea
- Headache
Without treatment, heat exhaustion can progress to heat stroke, which is a medical emergency characterized by confusion, loss of consciousness, or a body temperature above 104°F.
Staying hydrated, taking breaks in the shade, and avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day can help reduce your risk.
5. Insect Bites and Stings
Mosquitoes, bees, wasps, and other insects are especially active during the summer months.
Most bites and stings cause mild discomfort, itching, redness, and swelling. However, some individuals may develop severe allergic reactions that require immediate medical attention.
Visit urgent care if you experience:
- Increasing redness or swelling
- Signs of infection
- Large areas of swelling
- Persistent pain or discomfort
Call 911 immediately if you develop difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or severe dizziness after a sting.
6. Minor Burns
Summer burns can happen around grills, campfires, fireworks, hot pavement, or even from prolonged sun exposure.
Minor burns should be cooled with running water and kept clean. Medical evaluation is recommended if burns are large, blister extensively, involve the face, hands, feet, or genitals, or show signs of infection.
Preventing Summer Injuries
Many outdoor injuries can be prevented by taking a few simple precautions:
- Wear supportive footwear during outdoor activities.
- Use helmets and protective gear when biking or skating.
- Stay hydrated throughout the day.
- Apply sunscreen regularly.
- Stretch before participating in sports.
- Keep a basic first aid kit nearby.
- Supervise children during outdoor play.
